Summary: The Holocaust through the voices of survivors
Comment: 'Remembering: Voices of the Holocaust" is a compelling read that had me riveted from beginning till end. It is a compilation of personal testimonies by survivors of the Holocaust who originated from all over Europe. These men and women, including children [at the time of the war] tell of their painful experiences of being deprived of a normal life/childhood, of being persecuted by the Nazis and being victimised by anti-Semites [neighbors, former friends etc], and of how the Nazis' systematic persecution finally deprived them of all sense of freedom and dignity.

The book is well-organised into chapters that basically follow the Jewish victims of the Nazis from the beginning till the implementation of the Final Solution and the aftermath of the war [after liberation]:
1933-1936:Persecution
1937-39: The Search for Refuge
1939: War
1940-41: The Third Reich Expands
1939-42: The Ghetto[i]
1943-44: The Ghetto[ii]
1940-44: The Camps[i]
Resistance
1944-45: The Camps[ii]
1945:Death March
1945:Liberation
Aftermath

Interspersed with survivor testimonies are also testimonies by non-Jewish observers such as German and Polish children who witnessed the persecutions of Jews, and even a Nazi himself [who is unrepentant and goes as far as to say he thought the camp inmates looked healthy!].

The survivors' testimony is truly heartbreaking to read - these people have been through the most horrendous experiences and yet managed to not only survive but to tell the world of what they had lived through - watching loved ones torn from their arms, bidding good-bye to parents, siblings, spouses and children [in many cases not even being able to say goodbye before the Nazis murdered their beloved], witnessing atrocities of the worst kind [an SS man shooting a child through its mouth after offering him a piece of candy] - such horrors that one cannot imagine is attested to here.

Author Lyn Smith has been interviewing Holocaust survivors for 25 years and her book is a must read for many reasons: to remember and never forget these atrocities, to honor all those lost innocent lives, and in a world where genocide is still being committed, the lessons to be learnt from this book is plentiful indeed.

Summary: Survivers of the Holocaust tell their stories
Comment: This book is a compalation of many many books. The author tells the stories of many people who lived threw the holocaust. The stories are all harrowing and tell about the different asspects of the war.

Some of the people were in hiding, some were involved in the kindertransports that took German Jewsish Children to England to live. Some people talked about life in the Ghettos and camps where they witnessed things no human should have had too. There were intervews from people in the resistance, as well as so called "aryans" who witnessed some of the awfull things done during the war.

This is a must read book, very powerfull and hard to put down.

Summary: Painful personal testimonies of the Shoah
Comment: Lyn Smith is to be highly commended for the work she did in putting together this volume. She interviewed tens of survivors of the Shoah, and presents their testimony in segments gathered around specific themes. Many of the paragraph- length testimonies are soul- shaking.
I was particularly moved by a number of the testimonies of Rena Quint who survived as a child in Bergen- Belsen through the help of others. Her description of her liberation and her life afterwards in the States, her discovery and wonder at this world of freedom is particularly moving.
But there are dozens of others who testify about the injustices and horrors of the Shoah.
It may seem that there are already thousands of books about the Shoah, and that another one makes little sense. But anyone reading this volume will once again understand why telling these stories is necessary and valuable.
