When seventeen-year-old T. J. Parsell held up the local Photo Mat with a toy gun, he was sentenced to four and a half to fifteen years in prison. The first night of his term, four older inmates drugged Parsell and took turns raping him. When they were through, they flipped a coin to decide who would "own" him. Forced to remain silent about his rape by a convict code among inmates (one in which informers are murdered), Parsell's experience that first night haunted him throughout the rest of his sentence. In an effort to silence the guilt and pain of its victims, the issue of prisoner rape is a story that has not been told. For the first time Parsell, one of America's leading spokespeople for prison reform, shares the story of his coming of age behind bars. He gives voice to countless others who have been exposed to an incarceration system that turns a blind eye to the abuse of the prisoners in its charge. Since life behind bars is so often exploited by television and movie re-enactments, the real story has yet to be told. Fish is the first breakout story to do that.

Customer Rating: Summary: This book left me sobbing! Wow! What a book! Comment: Fish took this man a lifetime to write. He spent years in therapy and recovery from the experiences he endured while inside prison. With the grace and dignity of a gentle man, he takes us back there and systematically outlines what's terribly wrong with our nation's prison system. He doesn't tell us. He shows us, though his own brutal experiences. Yet no where does he succumb to being a victim. His blunt, self-effacing honesty is difficult to read at times. At 17 year old, this emotionally handicapped kid found himself in a position where he was in way over his head - and the gaurds were completely indifferent. The prevailing attitude at the time was - if you don't want to be raped - stay out of prison. Our protagonist learns how to the play the system. He learns how to manipulate, find true love, cultivate a mentor and gain the knowledge necessary to rise up from his circumstances and to transcend his past. Mr. Parsell was released from prison at 21, put himself through college, went to work in the software business and retired a millionaire, at the age of 40. It would have been easy for him to sit back and quietly enjoy the fruits of his success. Instead, he chose to speak out and to raise awareness of the plight of non-violent, first time offenders who are thrown into the cesspool of our nation's prisons. A 17 year old boy should never be placed in a situation where older, more violent inmates are allowed to pray on the young. Mr. Parsell served as a consultant to the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission, the first-ever federal legislation to address sexual violence in prison. Given his background, the odds were greatly stacked against him - and yet something enabled him to rise up from the ashes and improve the system for those that followed him. He is the embodiment of the word Redemption. You won't be able to put this book down. It will leave you breathless, furious, and at times titillated (which will later make you feel guilty). But mostly, you will be moved. Deeply moved. Never again, will you be able to say - I didn't know.
Customer Rating: Summary: Could not stop.... Comment: I found this book, by chance, and could not stop reading it. I loved this book from start to finish. This man's account of life in prison as a 17 year old boy is so interesting. It is difficult to imagine coming of age the way that the author did and the way his life unfolded. This is a must read for anyone. It catches you and does not let go. This book is a must read! Thank you, Tim for writing such an amazing book! I am sorry that you had to live this life, but the memoir is so amazing.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonder if this still happens... Comment: It`s a bit slow in the beginning but once he starts to tell about prison it's hard to put down. It's sad that guards are aware of rape but it doesn't seem they do too much to put a stop to it. T. J. Parsell makes a good point when he says it doesn't matter what anyone does, no one deserves to be raped. Someone made a comment in their review that prison isn't suppose to be easy, I agree but that doesn't mean that these people should be terrorized either.
Did anyone notice at the end of the chapters the fish starts to fill out?
Over all I think it was a good story.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pass this book to another and start a dialogue... Comment: In the book Fish, by T.J.Parsell's, we relive the memories of his life while serving time in the Michigan Prison System from the age of 17 to 21. Woven into those memories are insights from his life while growing up with a dysfunctional family that embraced a humorous outlook towards their experiences with crime and mischief. So much in fact, that T.J. performs a robbery with a toy gun and believes his "prank" will have him sentenced in a Juvenile Facility. The reality comes after being sentenced and is far from humorous while he learns to survive his experiences while incarcerated in the Adult Correction System.
The inadequacies of the justice system are also poignantly reflected through T.J.Parsell's story due to the legal system deficits he encounters. Housing prisoners with no differentiation to age or crimes, is not only dangerous for young or first time inmates, but also reflects a legal and social system that does not seem to care what happens after the cell doors are shut.
Our society's ability to have an "out of sight, out of mind" attitude comes to fruition when prisoners don't have programs to rehabilitate while incarcerated and upon release. Hence, broken when they went in and still broken when they come out. Instead of rehabilitation they become institutionalized to the prison system, returning again and again, because the real world continues to be unmanageable. T.J. Parsell's ability to get out and make a new life for himself is admirable but not as surprising. Shortly before he left, a prisoner told him "he didn't belong here, never did" reflects that even inmates recognize that there is a difference in their approach to life. T.J. Parsell's speaks to your heart and your conscious in his book...I applaud him for finding his voice.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful and moving! Comment: This book is wonderful and, unfortunately, quite accurate for a lot of young men and women in prison. I applaud Mr. Parsell for having the courage to tell his story - it is not an easy thing to do. I would definitely recommend this book to others.
